Have you ever thought about the animal that you are watching in its cage at a zoo or tank at an aquarium? Have you thought about its life and how it is different from the wild? One website states "Tigers and lions have around 18,000 times less space in zoos than they would in the wild. Polar bears have one million times less space. (Captive Animals' Protection Society)". This isnt only for zoos, the same thing happens at aquariums. "Tanks only allow a few stroakes in any direction before coming to a wall. (The Humaine Society of the United States)". As shown by these two sources, zoos and aquariums cannot give animals as much room as they need. Space is a necesary part of animals' lives. These animals are suffering on account of our entertainment. They did nothing wrong and now they must pay for our selfishness. Not only this, but these animals have been given food by humans for years, if they were released into the wild, they would starve. As long as zoos are around, these animals will come to the same fate... a life in captivity.
Zoos and aquariums are well known places for children and school groups, claiming to be educational and fun. But are zoos and aquariums really as great as they claim to be? What is it that makes zoos educational? The only thing that makes zoos and aquariums the slightest bit educational are the signs on the outside of an animals enclosure or a guided tour. These signs list some basic facts about the animal such as their diet and size. The tour guides also list of basic facts, maybe even reading straight off the sign. But are these tours signs really giving us knowledge of the animal? These are simple facts that any person who could afford to go to a zoo or aquariums could look up on the internet or in a book. So other than the fact that people find zoos and aquariums a fun place to hang out and see animals, why do they exisit. The answer is profit. Managers and owners of zoos and aquariums generaly don't care about the educational purposes, they care about how much money these animals are giving them.
